On a relaxing Thursday evening in September, downtown Columbia is full of families, activities and great food. I stopped off at Shake’s Frozen Custard that night during the Twilight Festival.

Shakes 9th Street

Shake’s, with three Columbia locations, was made for a night like this. A modern interior, barstool seating, and smiling faces accompany a charming patio on 9th street. Their menu of course boasts amazing treats that we will get to latter.

First we’ll hit upon the delightful Campus Coneys, the offshoot of Shake’s. Campus Coney’s is there to make sure you eat a little something before you dive into an all ice cream meal. Nathan’s famous all beef hot dogs line the menu with “Better Burgers”, a special recipe loose meat burger. Jumbo dog, jumbo chili dogs, or the jumbo chili cheese dog are all top choices at Campus Coneys. Add Frito Pie to the menu, White Cheddar Cheese Curds and Chili Cheese Fries and you can tell why this is a downtown favorite.

For me nothing compares to a hot dog at the ballpark. Even if you’re at the worst ballpark watching the Cubs a dog will still be great. The jumbo dogs at Campus Coneys were just that, great! Grab a side of sweet potato sticks with marshmallow dipping sauce for sweet treat even before dessert.

Without further delay let’s get to the ice cream. Ice cream is my weakness, like Superman to Kryptonite. I can give into anything if ice cream is promised. Shake’s is one of the best Columbia has to offer. Sundaes, Concretes, Malts, Floats, cups, cones, and even cakes. The huge menu that hangs overhead reinforces the pictures that hang on the wall. Don’t me intimidated, take your time and choose wisely.

The Classic Sundaes sound intriguing and delicious. Banana Danna Split, Pink Poodle, Heavenly Angel and Shake’s Bopper. All are loaded with smooth ice cream and overflow with topping. The concretes mix numerous toppings of your choice with Shake’s own custard making for a plethora of combinations. Even the old fashion Shakes and Malts are a great way to wrap up a meal or just as a well-deserved treat.

Shake’s together with Campus Coneys create a wonderful blend of enjoyment. hot dogs and ice cream meet up at one place and it’s a place you should visit soon.
