Chili's Bar & Grill - Posted 6/15/07

A visit to Chili’s Grill & Bar could elicit arguments on whether Chili’s is a Mexican restaurant. They have a little bit of everything with a lean towards Mexican cuisine. Point me. Either way Chili’s is a fun time out with great food for everybody.

You know you’ve arrived when you reach the big red chili pepper in front of the restaurant. A full festive atmosphere awaits you inside. There’s a bar to the left with tall tables, TVs, and intimidating pictures of Chili’s Presidente Margarita. The other side of Chili’s is filled with booths and tile topped tables that boast a Spanish theme. Whimsical pictures hang around the restaurant reminding you that food can be fun.

Chili’s starters cover a great variety. Southwest egg-rolls, skillet queso dip, and, of course, Chili’s classic nachos. The rest of their menu makes it hard to choose just one entree, especially with a growling stomach. Big salads, fire-grilled steaks, seafood, burgers, and sandwiches will keep you flipping back and forth.

I was between two. Chicken Club Tacos, three tortillas filled with mesquite chicken and applewood smoked bacon then topped with chipotle ranch dressing and mixed cheeses. The other choice tugging at my taste buds was Chili’s new fajita trio. A skillet that would bring sizzling’ steak, chicken and shrimp to my table. Being a new item and looking quite photogenic on the menu I went with the latter of the two.

You can order your burger or tacos but when Chili’s brings out that sizzling, smoking skillet everybody looks, it never fails. A bed of red peppers and onions were smothered with steak, chicken and shrimp. Of course the rest of the table is concealed with sour cream, lettuce, cheese, rice, beans and warm tortillas. Chili’s fajitas taste great. But half of the meal is fun putting them together, every bite is unique and different.

The shrimp was grilled with a mild spice that blended well with the cool sour cream. Chili’s grilled chicken absorbed all the flavor of the onions and peppers from the skillet. The steak was juicy and swelled with a lime marinade. Putting this entire spread together made for a fun and tasty meal, which left me full. But I had to leave room for what came next.

A new dessert option at Chili’s is excellent in it’s simplicity. Called the Sweet Shots. Your choice of one or three large shot glasses filled with three different dessert treats. Strawberries top one glass followed by graham cracker crumbs and smooth cheesecake. The second shot is a caramel apple with apple slices peaked with a cinnamon crust and it’s all smothered in a sweet caramel sauce. The final sweet shot is best described as nothing but chocolate and it’s remarkable. This dessert proved to be plenty for one person and just enough for two.

No matter how you describe Chili’s Grill & Bar you can always plan on having an enjoyable time with friends and family. They have a bunch of new items on the menu that promise you’ll always find something out of the ordinary and enjoyable.
