Joey's Seafood & Grill - Posted 3/1/07

On a regular Tuesday night I found myself being reeled into a new restaurant in Columbia. Joey’s Seafood & Grill made my regular Tuesday into a great fun filled evening.

Joey’s Seafood & Grill is only a few months old in Mid-Missouri but it is something you need to check out. The franchise was originaly started in 1985 by seafood lover Joe Klassen. He wanted to create a friendly and fun seafood restaurant that you would find in any booming seafood town like Nantucket. Since ’85 locations have been popping up nationwide.

Walk into Joey’s and the first thing you’ll come across is a huge aquarium with all kinds of fish, fish that are not on the menu of course. Dark wood, bobbers, sea life, boat parts, and fishing pictures dot the walls. The impressive bar stands to your right where you can grab a drink and a quick lunch or plop down at a table or both. A huge chalkboard hangs on the back wall with specials of the day.

Flip through Joey’s big menu and you’ll find all your seafood favorites; Crab Cakes, Scallops, Lobster, Fish & Chips, Shrimp, and Crab Legs. Even some new favorites could appear like the Calamari Tacos, Lobster & seafood Roll, or the Walleye Dinner. Joey’s Seafood & Grill can even accommodate the non-seafood lover with Steaks, Chicken and Burgers.

As the splendid Jazz and Cajun music pour into Joey’s we order some Crab Cakes for an appetizer. Made to order crab cakes with Blue Crab meat and Japanese style breadcrumbs come to our table warm and with a slight crisp to the outside. The accompanying sauce is not needed but it does make a nice compliment. Flaky and moist the cakes were flawlessly prepared.

I found myself going back and forth on my entrée decision but finally I chose the Mixed Grill, possibly Joey’s best meal for your money. You get Charbroiled Salmon, Mahi Mahi, Cajun Spiced Shrimp, Hush Puppies, a Corn Muffin and another side all for 15 bucks! That is one heck of a deal.

The Salmon was a beautiful pink color and flake with just a tap of the fork. The Mahi Mahi was buttery smooth with a delightful texture. The Cajun Spiced Shrimp had an awesome kick! Even the Hush Puppies were crunchy and delicious, then again I’ve always been a sucker for good Hush Puppies. All the texture and colors on one plate was overwhelming and made for an outstanding dinner.

We also tried out the Margarita Shrimp Pasta which hit the spot for my dining companion. Not only is it a lot of pasta but the added “jumbo” shrimp was impressively jumbo. Served up in a zesty white wine sauce the meal will give your taste buds a subtle spark.

Whether you choose your food from the menu or the chalkboard chances are you won’t go wrong at Joey’s Seafood & Grill. Hook the whole family and row your way in for a great time.
