The Bread Basket Cafe - Posted 2/22/07
Walking up to the Bread
Basket Café you’ll notice it stands out a
bit. Doesn’t really look like a café. More like a Hacienda.
Well before it evolved into the Bread Basket a few Mexican restaurants
occupied the building that have since disappeared. Instead of tearing
down the unique site the owners thought why not leave it up and make
it excel.
We stroll in off 8th street on a chilly Wednesday afternoon and were very impressed by the stucco walls and beautiful archways we passed on the way in. When the temperature decides to climb back up the Bread Basket Café’s outstanding patio will become a faithful resting spot. Inside bright colors adorn the walls making simple artwork pop into your sight. The contrasting dark floor snakes through a large dining area that is cut up by small arch windows. If the yellow walls aren’t enough light for you the immense skylight pours in sunlight on cloudless days.
The Bread Basket Café is known for their ½ sandwich and bread bowl of soup. That can add up to a lot of different combinations for your lunch or dinner. Their café specials include Italian Philly, Roast Beef & Cheddar, Sweet n’ Sour Turkey, Corned Beef, and many more sandwiches that will make it hard choice. The Bread Basket Café doesn’t skimp on soup either. Clam Chowder, Cream of Potato Bacon, Chicken Chili, Vegetable Beef, and more can all fill your bread bowl.
I settled into a high top table with my ½ Reuben and Bread
Bowl of Cream of
Potato
soup. The Bread Basket Café bakes the bread fresh everyday
and the soup as well. Their dedication to fresh homemade selections
really can be tasted. The Reuben was a generous helping of Corned Beef
covered in melting Swiss and topped with Thousand Island dressing. I
passed on the Sour Kraut for the sake of my co-workers, but the Reuben
was delicious without it. The Bread “bowl”
was filled to the top with Cream of Potato soup. It was warm
and wonderful just what I need on a cold February day. Big
chunks of potato and bacon were joined with chives and carrots to make
an terrific soup. The best part about a bread bowl is you can eat that
too! Fresh bread on top of
Cream of Potato soup and a thick Reuben sandwich
is a perfect lunch if you ask me.
The
Bread Basket Café should already be on your mind when
you need a good healthy lunch. I hope it now comes
to mind when you need some dinner too. Once the winter goes away do
yourself a favor and grab a seat on what might be the best looking patio
in town. Make a trip south on 8th street and enjoy the Bread Basket
Café for lunch, dinner or a treat on a lazy Saturday afternoon.
