Just off Rangeline sits a new restaurant called Mackenzie's. It's named after the owner's daughter and they "strive to bring you the freshest ingredients, the finest quality meats and fish, as well as the best service in town." I must say they do a pretty good job at it.
The dimly lit dining room sits to the right of the bar with Picasso-esque paintings on the wall. On this chilly, night a raging fireplace is the only thing on an unobtrusive TV. Throughout Mackenzie's light music plays while a lit candle rests on every table. The black ceiling and aromas from the wood-burning grill provide a relaxed and inviting atmosphere.
There are several great ways to start your dinning experience at Mackenzie's, breaded black olives, fried oysters, or try one of their specialties; fried spinach or beef brochette. The brochette gives a wonderful taste of what the grill has to offer. The slow grilling allows the beef and marinade to combine for a robust flavor that is quite enjoyable.
Along with salads, pastas, and sandwiches Mackenzie’s offers choices from "field" and "stream." Filet, ribeye, chicken, duck and pork all dot the "field" side of the menu. Sea bass, orange roughy, Mahi Mahi, and lobster tail are under the "stream" section.
Mackenzie's House Specialty, the Crab Stuffed Bistro Filet, caught my eye immediately. Just reading it aloud made me reach for my knife and fork. Certified Angus beef cooked to your liking and stuffed with the house crab salad. It reached my plate medium rare and with every cut, juicy crabmeat surged out. Mackenzie's wood grill infused the meat with such a great flavor it was hard to define what was the best part. The juice from the filet absorbed into the crab mingling with its sweetness. Two excellent, robust flavors merge to make this an impressive entree.
With no room left for dessert, I went for it anyway; why not? The dessert for two features fried brownie squares plated with scoops of vanilla ice cream topped with whipped cream and chocolate sauce. Somewhere that night, a personal trainer was crying.
Mackenzie's not only surprised but they also impressed. Their staff has a fine knowledge of the wines they offer, their food and even know a little about Seinfeld, which always makes for amusing conversation. Having a restaurant named after you is one thing, having an outstanding restaurant named after you is indeed something to be proud of.
